Requirements

Canadian Citizenship and Valid Passport

You must be a Canadian citizen to qualify for TN visa status as a Registered Nurse. Canadian permanent residents are not eligible.  A valid passport is required when applying for TN status and entering the United States for employment. 

NCLEX-RN® Exam

You must successfully pass the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN®) .

Nursing Degree from an Accredited Nursing Program

A comprehensive assessment of your secondary school and nursing school education to ensure it is comparable to a U.S. graduate in the profession. You will need to submit your diploma, academic transcripts, and course descriptions. 

English Language Proficiency

You must pass an approved English exam unless you qualify for a country/language exemption. Approved tests and minimum passing scores:

  • TOEFL iBT: Minimum overall score of 83, with a minimum speaking score of 26
  • Academic IELTS: Minimum overall score of 6.5, with a minimum spoken band of 7.0

Active RN License (Canada or United States)

You must hold an active RN license in Canada or the United States and be in good standing with the applicable licensing authority. 

Credentialing

1. VisaScreen Certificate (Completed through CGFNS/TruMerit)

Note: VisaScreen certificates are typically valid for 5 years, after which you must apply for a VisaScreen Renewal if you are still navigating the immigration or adjustment of status process.
